Interview with Becky Dawson of One Lane Road & a giveaway

 MEET BECKY

1. Tell us a little bit about the name of your company and how it originated?

I came up with the the name of my business, do to the fact that I actually live on a one lane road! At the time of starting up, we had just moved to our dream home in the country. I knew I wanted my business and designs to have the small town rural vibe... so I just looked out my front porch one day, and the idea of One Lane Road came to mind!

2. When and why did you start One lane road and why?

One Lane Road started almost 4 years ago. Before that I was making and selling leather accessories, but it wasn't going quite where I wanted it to. Screen printing was always something I'd be curious about, so one day I decided to do some research. Fast forward 3 months later, and One Lane Road was born. Yup, I kinda jumped into it. I was ready to have a handmade biz that worked. I was a stay at home mom with a 3 year old, and I wanted so desperately to make an income selling my art, so I could continue staying home with her. After only a few short months of my Etsy shop being open, I was getting contacted by big name magazines, indie film makers, bloggers, etc. The reaction was quite surprising, and still is...but I knew I had stumbled onto something good. So, I just kept plugging along and making new things - and here I still am!

3. What is your favorite part of the business?

Being my own boss. I was a freelance hairstylist for a number of years before selling my art. I loved the freedom that came along with that, and knew it would be very hard to ever go back working for someone else again. Making things and being creative has always been what I wanted to do with my life. To be able to do what I love everyday, and make a living at it - doesn't get much better than that. Also, having the flexibility to me there for my kids, that's huge.

4. Tell us a little about how your creative process works?

Lately, I really try to keep up with the seasons and think one step ahead, but honestly, that's not the case all of the time. I'm a bit of a introvert/daydreamer/head-stuck-in-the-clouds kinda gal. I have creative ideas popping out left and right on a daily basis. It's more a case of finding the time to make all of my ideas into reality! So I make lists. Lots of lists. Then when I find a moment where I'm inspired to sketch a or make new design, I just go at it. Otherwise, my day to day creative process is making and filling orders that come in. As of right now I'm just a one women show, so daily orders, emails, packing & shipping - those type of tasks are what keeps my work day full.

5. Briefly describe a normal day in your life?

I have a (almost) 2 year old and a 6 year old. They keep me busy most of the day so it's the juggling act running my business too. In the morning hours after I get the oldest off to school, I get some quality one on one time with my little one. She still takes a good afternoon nap, so when she's fast asleep that's when most of the magic happens. I package up orders that are going out, print or make orders that are up next. Once my husband gets home in the evenings, I try to squeeze in as much odds and ends as I can. Then I make dinner for the family, and wind down. Once the kids are off to bed I try to work on emails and shop updates....then I do it all over again the next day! When times come around like the holidays, show prep, or large wholesale orders and deadlines...things get a little chaotic. I make it work, though! I'm super close to hiring help a couple days a week. I can only dream of what I would accomplish!

6. Tell us a little about yourself { the maker } ?

I'm a jeans and t-shirt gal who loves to draw. I enjoy the outdoors, and scheming up adventures. I get a thrill out of estate sales, live music, travel, growing and cooking my own food, and DIY projects. My handsome husband and adorable girls, they are my heart and soul.

7. What gets your creative juices flowing?

I'm always on the search for the next, "great idea". I love brainstorming and searching for inspiration. The Internet is a great place for that, but my best ideas usually come when I connect directly with a person, place, or object. I feel a great connection with being outdoors and nature, that is why most of my art is influenced by that. There's also something to be said about connecting with another person. To throw all your ideas back and forth...and have someone totally get you, that always fuels me up.

8. Whats next for One Lane Road?

Oh man, I have so many hopes and dreams for One Lane Road!! This year I am making some big and needed changes and upgrades. I finally purchased equipment I've needed forever, and I'm in the process of moving out of the spare bedroom and into a bigger work space (hooray!). I'll be set up to work on larger orders soon, and maybe even hire some help. I'd like to focus on more wholesale accounts, applying to bigger craft/handmade shows, and spread my wings in the teaching world. I just started teaching workshops last year, and LOVE it. Sharing this knowledge and passion I've accumulated over the years, and watching others eyes light up when they learn something new and fun - it's a rush.
